Why Angels?

Updated: May 14, 2025

The Bible has a lot to say about these “ministering spirits” that seem to operate mostly in the unseen realm, working with and for us at God’s direction. Mankind is “lower” in some way than these beings, yet the Bible is clear that angels are now subject to Jesus the firstborn Son of God, and therefore subject to all those who are members of God’s family.

Angels do not always do “nice” things, any more than God Himself is always “nice”. Their awesome power has been applied with devastating results. What most translations of the Bible interpret as “evil spirit from the Lord” in the Old Testament (for example, Judges 9:23 and 1 Samuel 16:14) was never a demon if it came at God’s direction – as God does not fraternize with the enemy. If it came as a result of man’s disobedience, it could have been demonic spirits taking advantage of the absence of God’s protection. (See also Why the Devil? and Why Job?). Angels of God do what they are told by God, always operating in accordance with God’s Word.
