Why Patience?

The scripture says that we should “imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promise.” Why doesn’t it just say “faith?” It adds patience because seeing the answer could take some time. That’s when you must take a stand on God’s Word in faith and then do this: “wait on the Lord.” That’s patience.

Bible patience isn’t merely waiting around for God to do something about your situation. No, that’s often ignorance, apathy, or laziness, which is basically nothing more than a wish or a hope. The kind of patience required to inherit God’s promise is a persistence of faith, a refusal to back down from what God promised no matter how the circumstances look or feel. The Bible teaches that we should “let patience have her perfect work,” meaning that we should stand until we actually experience what we are believing God for.

The parable of the unjust judge is a picture of this kind of patience. The widow was due justice because the law said so, and she would not accept anything less. How many of God’s promises are due you as a believer? All of them! Jesus offers every blessing to those who will believe His Word. He is not deaf to our cry but is actively moving heaven and earth to bring those blessings into our lives. Can we stand on God’s promise until we see it come to pass for us? Can we hang on in faith expecting God to come through for us, even when everything and everyone seems to be telling us that it’s hopeless? Stand firm and you will see the miraculous!
