Why Vote?

Some people take great care of their homes, their cars, their families, and even their jobs. Yet when it comes to their government, they let it fall to pieces by sheer neglect. In America as in any true government “of the people,” the government is the responsibility of the voter.
Make no mistake. In America our government will fall into the hands of those greedy for power and money — unless good people work to prevent it. When evil reigns, good is punished and wickedness is rewarded. Freedoms drip away as more and more mandates and controls are justified “for the greater good.” Eventually everyone becomes a lawbreaker in that environment with a perpetual fear of being caught. Peace evaporates as lawlessness takes over. We cannot in good conscience just sit by and let all this happen. We pray, then we act as God gives us influence, ability and direction.
“But aren’t we supposed to stay out of politics? Didn’t Jesus say that ‘my Kingdom is not of this world?’” The Bible teaches that God made us responsible for what goes on here until Jesus returns. Even the famous scripture “If my people…will humble themselves and pray…I will heal their land” puts the responsibility on “my people,” not God. People do the praying, and God does the healing. The latter doesn’t happen without the former. Jesus said, “Do business until I come,” expecting things to be better off within our jurisdictions by the time He returns. They better not be the same or worse! (See also Why Me? Why do I matter?)
“If I become a Christian, do I have to be a Republican?” It is a shame that this is even a thing in America, but it is. Here is one approach: Vote the issues, not the party. Check the Bible for its positions on the issues that each candidate emphasizes, remembering Jesus’ words: “a tree is known by its fruit.” Don’t compromise on an evil thing in the name of something good. Pray and expect the Lord to show you whom and what to vote for, and encourage others to do the same.
God will help you take care of the government that He gave you. America’s founders expected future Americans to seek the Lord. They wrote that the nation won’t survive unless we do!
