Why Blood?
Go to a Christian church service and you will likely hear someone mention “blood” at least once, and probably many times! Why are we Christians always talking and singing about blood? It may sound gross, but this goes way back to the very first sin of mankind, the treason of Adam. There God Himself spilled the blood of an animal to cover Adam and Eve with skins after they saw their own nakedness and were ashamed.
This pattern of shedding blood – the blood of an innocent spotless animal – was a ritual intended as a covering for the shame of wrongdoing. It was spiritual protection against condemnation and guilt. It didn’t take away the sin itself but gave the “wearer” a legal way to move forward and avoid penalty.
Yet this “clothing” was always temporary. It was offered constantly by priests, a recurring reminder that sin and its accompanying shame were ever present. If someone were to forget or forsake this, they would have remained “exposed” to the legal consequences of their sin.
This is where Jesus comes in. He offered Himself once and for all as a sacrifice for all the sin of mankind. His shed blood is the reason why much of the world has a great future ahead of it! Without that blood, there would be no ultimate escape from our sin. All we could do is wait for a final verdict where we all would be found guilty of endless punishment. Sadly, many will not believe in Jesus and will die in their sin. Yet it is written that a countless multitude from “all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues” will respond in faith and enjoy the blessings of a new world order under Jesus’ reign. Thank God for the blood of Jesus!
