Why don’t Christians follow the Law of Moses?
Updated: December 2, 2025
Isn’t it curious that Jesus never took ownership of the Law of Moses? Speaking to the Jews, He always referred to it as “your law” not “my law” or “My Father’s law.” What is that about? He certainly followed the law as it was given, though He didn’t follow the ridiculous rules added to it by man afterward. Could it be that His followers were to be a new breed, a new spiritual bloodline that did not trace its roots to Moses but to the very Spirit of God? This same God promised centuries before that He would trade hearts of stone for hearts of flesh, and that He would write God’s law on the heart instead of on stone tablets. This is referring to being Born Again, which necessarily involves a total transformation of the heart.
The Apostle Paul argues in the Bible book of Galatians and elsewhere that the law was never meant to be permanent, but rather a way to keep the Jews (and like-minded non-Jews) alive and well until the coming of the Messiah, Who was and is Jesus. Jesus took the entire penalty of the law upon Himself and settled the law for us once and for all. This spiritual act requires a spiritual response to be applicable to the individual, and this response is faith. A person must believe to experience the transformation. Otherwise, the law of Moses still applies to the person, and they stand condemned according to that law. It is everyone’s default condition unless they believe!
So trust in Jesus and be free from a burdensome life of rules and regulations (even “Christian” ones!). The Christian life is not supposed to be a heavy burden of trying to “measure up” to God’s standards. The law itself shows that this is impossible. Our lives are supposed to be filled with the joy of walking day by day with the Spirit of our heavenly Father and the comfort and encouragement of our spiritual family. When we walk in that Spirit of Love, we can be sure that we are always in the will of God!
