Why Spiritual Growth?

Updated: February 11, 2026

Do you really want your babies to stay babies forever? Probably not, and God doesn’t either. In His way of thinking, being born into His family (See Why Born Again?) is only the beginning. From then on He wants us to grow! How does this happen? It is true that we learn things as we mature physically, but spiritual maturity has more to do with how much you know and put into practice. It is completely possible to be old physically and yet very immature spiritually.

How do you know if you are spiritually mature? Well, how do others see you? Are you known as selfish, combative, or jealous? Are you known for worry, greed, or impatience? Are you considered conceited, foolish, or unreliable? We all fly off the handle sometimes, but Christians who have an obvious reputation in these things are – by the Bible’s standard — spiritually immature. They still need to grow up in these areas.

Thankfully, God works with us in our immaturity, always encouraging us to take new steps of faith, to go further than we’ve ever gone before. God has set people in the church to teach His people and lead them into spiritual maturity. (This is also called Discipleship.) By learning and doing what the Bible says a Jesus-follower should do, we show our maturity, like a baby learning to walk, or a teenager learning to drive.

You will make mistakes, but it’s ok. Don’t get overly concerned about yourself if you keep blowing it in some particular area. God is very patient and not usually in a hurry. Repent every time you mess up, and you can be confident that He will forgive and show you the right way to handle it next time. By walking day by day with the Lord, you will learn and you will grow!
