Three things everyone needs to know: #1 Know God
Sooner or later, every person comes to recognize their own limits, the end of themselves. We do not know or see everything, we cannot be everywhere, we cannot prevent all bad things from happening. We cannot change anything for very long, nor are we completely sure what we should change. We find that the visible life and matter in our universe doesn’t offer enough intrinsic meaning to satisfy us. We long for something greater than ourselves: a purpose, a guiding hand, an overarching force for good and order against evil and chaos.
This recognition and yearning can be explained by our origin. The Bible tells us that we were created in the image of God, and that He alone satisfies our deepest needs. As the Creator of all, He alone knows all the right questions, and all the right answers. It makes sense then that a pursuit of God is our highest calling.
Thankfully, we have the Bible, which reveals God to us. We find that He is holy and just, but also that He is merciful and compassionate. The agnostic maintains that God is not knowable, yet Jesus revealed God to us in a way that no man ever did before or since, demonstrating that God actually wants people to know Him. He makes it as easy as possible by promising that we would find Him if we only seek Him with our whole heart. He says that He will respond, even to the prodigal who ran away from God and squandered his life away. God will even pursue the lost sheep who runs away from Him!
Knowing God, the very Author of Life and the highest Authority, gives one a tremendously powerful advantage. Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David, and many others testify in the Bible of how critical their relationship with God was to their own success in life. God’s Holy Spirit, whom Jesus said we could receive by faith, is willing to teach us everything we need to know, of things past, present, and future.
How can anyone be truly successful without knowing God? He is truly a Friend and Ally beyond all others, and in Jesus Christ it is possible to know Him!
