Why Grace?
Updated: October 27, 2025
Because without it, we are hopelessly doomed! Several scriptures make it plain that none of us are “good” enough to fulfill every law, to avoid breaking every rule. Even if we do a pretty good job of it, it is still like trying to long-jump the Grand Canyon. It is impossible, and very tiring to even try.
God knew this, which is why He came up with His own solution: be born as a man, fulfill all the law’s requirements, and then pay that law’s ultimate penalty for every human who ever lived. Anyone who believes (that is, has faith) in this will obtain the benefit of it. Man won’t have to work his whole life trying to evade punishment. All he has to do is believe.
Grace did this, not Justice. Justice demands that we pay for every wrong thing we do, while Grace offers mercy. There is no way a person can earn grace. No one is owed grace, or it wouldn’t be grace. This makes people uncomfortable, as we are much more comfortable with the idea of Justice. We are great at applying Justice to everyone but ourselves!
Again, how do we receive God’s grace? By faith. If it were by any other means, it would not be grace – it would be earned. To be sure, we will receive reward for what we do as children of God, but we wouldn’t even have that opportunity if God had not qualified us as citizens of His Kingdom.
