Why Unity?

God’s dear children, those “Born Again” into His family, collectively make up what is known as the “Body of Christ”. When the parts of any body start fighting each other, there is internal and external destruction. The mission of that body is hindered, and what it might have accomplished in those moments may be lost forever.

Yet the parts are so different! How are we to get along until Jesus comes? Clearly we will not get there by forcing our own (or God’s) will on everyone else, as even God Himself doesn’t act this way. Unity is possible by faith, love, patience, and submission: Submission first to God as the One Who commands unity, submission to the authority God placed in the church, and submission to one another. Division and strife simply can’t survive in that environment.

Can we be honest with one another, rebuking when necessary, but also quickly and freely forgiving as we want to be forgiven? Can we look past the faults and failures of other believers and see the brother or sister for whom Christ died? Can we stop questioning motives, and stop rejecting outright anyone who doesn’t hang with our “flock”? We can accomplish amazing things when we work together, effecting God’s Kingdom in the earth and destroying the works of darkness. Jesus said that the world would know that we’re truly His disciples if we love one another. Let’s do what the Word says and “make every effort” to preserve unity!
